October 25-26, 2013
We left Jamestown around 12:30 on Friday the 25th and arrived in Honolulu around 3:15 am on the 26th (eastern time). Went from Jamestown to Bradford, Pa to Cleveland to Las Vegas, to Honolulu. Long trip! But...leaving Jamestown, this is what the weather looked like:
And this is what it looked like in Honolulu this morning after we finally got up:
We spent about 14 hours in the air, but this is the largest single leg of the entire trip, so that's behind us. As you can guess, the temperature went from about 35 degrees in Jamestown to 85 degrees and clear here in Honolulu.
We had booked two days on the Waikiki Trolley, which runs four tour loops around the island. Turned out to be a great way to see Honolulu and the eastern end of Oahu. We picked up the trolley about two blocks from our hotel and actually made two laps around the route. Both laps took us along the shore and boy, is it beautiful. Check this out:
This is the eastern end of Waikiki Beach and the statue in the middle is of Duke Khanamoku, who was an Olympic Gold-Medal winner in 1912 and 1920. Here is another look at Waikiki and Diamond Head that we took later in the day:
This shot of Diamondhead was taken in front of a fountain at the Honolulu Zoo:
This tour took us up and into the crater at Diamondhead itself, but it was pretty much a flat expanse of brown dirt and cinders.
The next tour took us further along the coastline to the east and the scenery was just beautiful:
This is overlooking Hanauma Bay, just up the coast from Diamond Head.
Here is another view of Hanauma Bay:
Just Beautiful!
This is near the Halona Blow Hole, which I didn't get a very good picture of...
Further along the coast is the Makapuu Lighthouse, one of only two on the island:
Anyway, you can get some feel for how beautiful it is here!
I took in the USArmy Museum at Fort deRussey on Waikiki Beach, which was an old coastal gun installation built around 1900. Pretty interesting, including this picture of Daniel Inouye, who was a Medal of Honor recipient and US Senator for many years.:
Great day in a beautiful place!
Today, we're headed to Pearl Harbor for the day. More pics tomorrow!
